Peter Gatrell

Peter GatrellPeter Gatrell teaches at the University of Manchester where he is co-director of the Centre for the Cultural History of Modern War and affiliated to the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute. He is the author of a trilogy of books on refugee history, including A Whole Empire Walking: Refugees in Russia during World War 1 (1999), winner of the Alec Nove Prize as well as the Wayne Vucinich Prize awarded by the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies for ‘outstanding work in Russian, East European or Eurasian studies in any branch of the humanities or social sciences’. His book on the European refugee crisis during the First World War, entitled Europe on the Move, will appear in 2017. In 2011 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
