A distinguished Art Historian, gardener, designer and all round polymath, Roy’s magnum opus The Story of Britain hit the bestseller lists and became a classic. He was Director of the National Portrait Gallery from 1967 to 1973 and of the Victoria and Albert Museum from 1974 to 1987. In 1980 he was awarded the prestigious Shakespeare Prize by the FVS Foundation of Hamburg in recognition of his contribution to the arts in the UK. He has written extensively on Garden history and gardening and his beautiful The Artist and the Garden was published by Yale in 2000.

His A Little History of the English Country Church was a best seller. Cape published Visions of England to great acclaim in July 2011. His memoir Self-Portrait as a Young Man is published by Bodleian Library Press.
